  • Introduction

Chawton House Library is a charity with a unique collection of books focusing on women's writing in English from 1600 to 1830.

This specialist collection, set in the home and working estate of Jane Austen's brother, provides the opportunity to study and savour the texts in their original setting and inspires passion in readers of all ages.

    Our aims are twofold:

    • to educate the widest range of people in early English women writers and their relevance today
    • to run a self-sufficient estate along 18th century principles.

Your support is essential to secure our financial sustainability so that we can achieve these goals.

It costs £2,000 (almost $4,000) per day to maintain and run Chawton House Library, so please support our work.

    How can you help?

You can support us through friendship, membership or a donation.
