  • The North American Friends of Chawton House Library (NAFCHL) was formed in 2024 with the express purpose of raising interest and support for the library in the United States and Canada.

Friends of Chawton House Library – in the UK and abroad – are very important to us. Your support enables us to secure the future of the Library, the house, and the estate, endeavors that cost almost $4,000 a day to maintain, administer and run.

As a North American Friend, you will help the Library acquire new books, develop new educational programs and provide fellowships for North American Scholars to study at the Library.

You will be kept closely involved in the life of the Library, the house, and in all developments in the gardens and the working estate. Benefits include quarterly copies of The Female Spectator, as well as a free tour of the house (for you and a friend or guest) whenever you are in the UK.

In addition to Friends and Supporters we offer the opportunity to become a Patron. All Patrons enjoy privileged access to one of the finest collections of 18th century women's writing in the world through exclusive parties, private exhibitions, talks about the collection by our Librarian, insight into the massive conservation program of the building and grounds and specialized behind the scenes tours.

Subscribe online or download the NAFCHL application form [PDF, 524KB] and return it to:
