Chawton House Library is an ideal place to visit, and has much to offer to special interest groups as well as parties of friends looking for an interesting day out.

    Guided tours

These take place every Tuesday and Thursday, March to December, and Tuesdays only in January and February. The tours start at 2.30pm and include a thorough guided tour of the house and library and a self-guided tour of the gardens.

Gift Aid Admission is £6 for adults and £3 for children (5-15).This includes a voluntary donation of 10%. which allows us to claim back Gift Aid on the entry fee. Payment of the additional 10% donation is entirely voluntary, so if you prefer to pay the standard admission please advise our staff  when booking.

There are limited places on the tour so it is advisable to book ahead. Weekly tours may very occasionally be cancelled due to other activities.

    Garden-only tours

Visitors can explore the gardens on a self-guided tour from Monday to Friday between 10am and 4pm. For a garden-only tour, simply call up to the house to pay the £3 admission (£1.50 for children) and collect your guide.

    Pre-booked tours

Bespoke group tours for 10 people or more can be booked from Monday to Friday between 10am and 4pm for £7.50 per person. These can be tailored to specific interests and we will be happy to discuss your requirements and any particular requests.

    Visits for student groups

Groups of students from higher and further education institutions are very welcome to visit the Library for an introduction to the collections here, to find out more about the Library as a research resource. Such visits can also include a tour of the house itself to hear about its history.

    Disabled access for visitors

Visitors with impaired mobility and wheelchair users can access the ground floor Library Reading Room (where the bulk of the collection is housed), the Great Hall, Dining Room, Old Kitchen, and Library Terrace Gardens. Wheelchair users will need assistance if visiting alone, so please let us know and we will make arrangements to support you during your visit.
